A man from Swindon has been awarded £4million in compensation after a serious car crash left him “too angry to work”. Paul Vallance from Baydon, near Malborough, suffered a severe brain injury in a car accident in 2006. New figures have revealed that in the last five years the local authorities in Wales have paid out more than £800,000 in compensation to injured schoolchildren and legal fees. Successful claimants included one child with a severed thumb, and another that was knocked down by a vehicle driven by a teacher. The amount paid by the councils over the last five academic years amounted to £811,834.86, covering both the cost of damages and legal fees. Driving with a cold could be a lot more dangerous than drivers realise, according to new research from Halfords Autocentres. Studying accident data the garage network found that over 2,500 road accidents a week may be attributed to drivers suffering from heavy colds or flu. Sneezing at the wheel can result in motorists driving blind for as much as half a second, long enough to travel 15 metres at typical road speeds, as they inadvertently close their eyes. New research by the Association of British Insurers (ABI) shows that 55% of young drivers are distracted while driving if they are carrying passengers, 45% by the scenery and 44% by the radio – while around a quarter said they would find acceptable to speed at night (24%) or on country roads (26%). Recently published research has revealed that millions of UK motorists are failing to maintain their vehicles, needlessly endangering themselves and others.
