Increased rescues for RNLI in 2013

The RNLI saw a severe increase in call-out numbers due to the severe weather conditions and flooding of 2013. New figures have revealed that 1,127 lifeboats were launched during the year, which is up on the average number of call-outs by 13%. The figures further revealed that 1,155 people were rescued (up 23%) during these call-outs, and 49 people were saved from life-threatening situations. Since welsh emergency air ambulance crew members have worked longer shifts, a “significant” number of rescues have been successfully carried out that would not have otherwise been attended. With hours increasing by four hours for each rescue worker, accidents such as early morning and late night crashes, that previously would not have been attended, are being responded to and therefore more lives are being saved. Two groups of holidaymakers, including a six-year-old boy, were rescued by the RNLI: who had been attending an open day at their station at the time of the incident. The seven holidaymakers had been swimming off a Gwynedd beach and had gotten into difficulty because of the severity of a rip current. Luckily enough, due to Criccieth lifeboat holding the open day at their station, the team was able to launch the craft in a record time of three minutes. The health minister has described the acceptance of a new system regarding organ donation as being a “historic day”. A recent vote has allowed Wales to introduce a new ‘opt-out’ system for organ donation, meaning that individuals are assumed to have consented to their organs being donated after death.
